This is the eighth in a ten-part series called Life Design for Creative Entrepreneurs by IC Contributor Karen Armstrong Quartarone. If you would like to be a Contributor, read the guidelines here.
Last week we introduced Karen. This week she explains the Power Pyramid.
Have you ever felt like your life was spinning out of control… a messy composite of disparate pieces flying in all different directions?
Disorder is par for the course for creative types. It can be a great thing when it allows you to let go and get your creative juices flowing. But when your entire life is in disorder – when you’re lacking direction, not really knowing where you’re going or why – it can be a problem.
That’s where life design comes in. When you consciously design your life in a way that gives you meaning and direction, the disorder creative types love can move you from that out-of-control feeling to being a powerful force in creating a life you love.
I’ve always been a very organized person, so I created a model for the life design process I’ve taken myself through over the years. That model is the Life Design Power Pyramid which I’m about to share with you.
The individual concepts in this model are not new, but the way they’re integrated in the Power Pyramid as a 7-step process for designing your life is something that I’ve never encountered before. My hope is that it gives you a foundation – a structure – for how you can design your life in a way that allows you to harness your creative power.
What is Life Design?
Okay, so what exactly is “life design”? It’s the process of consciously creating what you desire in every area of your life.
We all want to be happy and experience a sense of well-being. Most people spend their lives haphazardly searching for the combination of lifestyle elements that will give them that sense of happiness, and yet they never seem to achieve that deep sense of happiness and well-being.
One of the reasons it seems is that they’re too busy making a living… they don’t take the time to actually design their life. Jim Rohn, one of the thought leaders on personal development said this: “I find it fascinating that most people plan their vacations with better care than they plan their lives.”
And that’s SO TRUE, isn’t it?
When you take the time to design your life you’re much more likely to experience that deep sense of happiness and well-being because you’re at the helm of your life. You’re steering it in the direction that you want to go, instead of just drifting in the wind and getting knocked around by the waves because you have no set course.
So Life Design allows you live your life proactively – creating what you want – rather than reactively. And the Power Pyramid is a tool that you can use to design your life.
The pyramid shape is actually seen by some as a supernatural source of power or energy. It’s said that when the human body is exposed to a pyramid, the person’s energy level and vitality is actually increased.
Here we’re using the pyramid shape in a symbolic way to represent the way you can design your life so that you’re doing it with energy and power. As you build your Power Pyramid you see how that energy and power really comes forth.
